Best beaches to learn to surf on the Cascais coast: a beginner's guide

Guincho, Carcavelos or Sintra? Find out which beach to choose for your first surf lessons based on your level, the tide and the wind, and how we choose the best spot for each lesson at Origem Surf School.

Best beaches to learn to surf on the Cascais coast: a beginner's guide

If you're just starting out, the beach you choose matters as much as the surfboard. A wave that's too strong or a beach full of currents can ruin a first experience that should be fun. The good news is that the coast of Cascais, Lisbon and Sintra has several beaches with different conditions, and there's always one that suits the day.

In this guide we explain what to look for in a beach for beginners and how to choose between the best-known ones in the area.

What makes a good beach for learning to surf

  • Sandy bottom: it's safer and more forgiving when you fall than rocky bottoms.
  • Slow-breaking waves: they give you time to paddle, stand up and find your balance.
  • Space: a wide beach spreads surfers out better and reduces the risk of collisions.
  • Wind and tide: the same spot can be great in the morning and tricky in the afternoon.
  • Access and facilities: parking, public transport, showers and support close to the water.

Carcavelos Beach: the classic for beginners

Carcavelos is one of the most popular beaches for learning to surf in Greater Lisbon. It's a long, sandy beach with several peaks along the bay, which helps spread the groups out. It's easy to reach by train (Cascais line) and by road, and there are support facilities right by the sand.

Ideal for: first lessons, children and anyone who wants to practise the basic technique.

Note: on days with bigger swell or lots of people, we choose the peak with the best conditions.

Guincho Beach: more exposed, more demanding

Guincho is a stunning setting, with the Sintra hills in the background, but it's a beach more exposed to wind and swell. It usually has more powerful waves and stronger currents, so it's better suited to those who already have some independence in the water. On calm days, it can also work for beginner lessons, always after checking the conditions first.

Ideal for: intermediate and advanced surfers, or beginners on small-swell days.

Note: the wind can change conditions very quickly. Always check the forecast and follow your coach's instructions.

Sintra beaches: an alternative when the sea calls for another plan

When the wind or swell doesn't favour the better-known beaches, the Sintra beaches offer alternatives facing in different directions. That's one of the advantages of training in a region with several options: you can surf even when one peak is unsurfable.

How we choose the beach for each lesson

We don't fix the beach in advance. The day before, we look at the wave forecast, wind direction, tide and the group's level, and only then decide where the lesson will take place. The exact location is communicated the day before. If the sea doesn't allow safe lessons, we reschedule at no cost or refund the amount paid.

Quick tips for your first day

  1. Arrive 15 minutes early to warm up and listen to the briefing.
  2. Bring swimwear, sunscreen and water. The softboard, wetsuit and leash are included.
  3. Learn to read the beach: watch where the waves break and where the currents are.
  4. Respect priority in the line-up. Read our article on surf etiquette rules.
  5. Get your body ready: physical preparation for surfing.
  6. Choose the right wetsuit for the season: what wetsuit thickness to wear in Portugal.
